At Calavey Pet Services, we understand that not all matings are straightforward. Even when both dogs are healthy and ready at the correct time, some pairs need a little extra support to help the mating process go smoothly and safely.

Our Canine Mating Assistance service is designed to provide calm, experienced handling and practical support for breeders during natural matings. Whether this is a first mating, an inexperienced dog or bitch, a difference in size, or simply a pairing that needs a little patience and guidance, we are here to help make the process as stress-free as possible for both dogs and owners.

What mating assistance may involve

Mating assistance can vary depending on the dogs involved, but may include:

• Timing guidance
  Ensuring the bitch is at the most suitable stage of her cycle is one of the most important parts of a successful mating. We can advise on this alongside progesterone testing results where appropriate.
• Calm handling and support
  Some dogs need time, reassurance and careful handling to feel comfortable. We provide a calm environment and experienced support to help reduce stress and encourage a natural mating where possible.
• Positioning assistance
  In some cases, support may be needed to help the dogs line up correctly, particularly where there is a size difference, lack of experience, or awkward positioning.
• Supervision throughout the mating
  We can supervise the mating process from introduction through to tie, helping to ensure both dogs remain safe, settled and properly supported throughout.
• Advice following mating
  After the mating, we can provide general guidance on next steps, expected timings, and whether repeat matings or further progesterone testing may be beneficial.

When mating assistance can be helpful
