Semen Processing & Shipping

Chilled Semen - Processing and Shipping

Using chilled semen can be an excellent option when the chosen stud dog is located elsewhere in the UK, or in some cases overseas, allowing breeders access to a wider choice of bloodlines without the need to transport the bitch.

At Calavey Pet Services, semen can be collected, assessed, prepared and packaged for safe chilled transport to its destination. Before any sample is sent, it is carefully evaluated to ensure the quality is suitable for use. Once approved, the semen is processed with MiniTube CaniPlus LT extender and prepared for shipment in specialist transport packaging designed to help maintain the correct temperature during transit.

Although chilled semen can remain viable for several days when handled and stored correctly, timing is absolutely key. Because chilled semen generally has a shorter lifespan once inseminated than fresh semen, careful planning is essential to give the best possible chance of success. For this reason, progesterone testing plays a vital role in helping determine both the best time to collect the semen and the ideal time to inseminate the bitch.

Successful chilled semen matings rely on all parts of the process coming together at the right time — collection, shipping and insemination all need to be carefully coordinated. This is why advance planning and close monitoring of the bitch’s cycle are so important.

For breeders sending semen abroad, or importing semen into the UK, there may be health testing and licensing requirements depending on the country involved. These can vary, so it is always important to check the latest entry requirements well in advance. In some cases, additional paperwork, import licences, export documentation or vaccination requirements may apply. Using a Specialist Fertility Veterinary Surgeon will advise and support this process from end to end.

One of the advantages of chilled semen is that it is generally more cost-effective than frozen semen. However, the process does require greater coordination, particularly when arranging transport within a tight timeframe. Courier availability, weekends, bank holidays and international shipping requirements can all affect planning, so it is always best to prepare as early as possible.

Depending on the semen quality and the breeding plan, chilled semen may be inseminated vaginally or, in some cases, placed directly into the uterus by a veterinary surgeon where appropriate.

At Calavey Pet Services, we are here to support breeders through the process with collection, semen assessment, chilled semen preparation, and breeding guidance, helping you plan each stage with confidence.

Guidance can also be provided regarding Specialist Fertility Veterinary providers for Insemination and Frozen Semen Collections, storage and subsequent insemination.
