Canine Semen Analysis

Canine Semen Analysis

Ideally all dogs should have their semen checked prior to being used at stud. This becomes more important if one or more of the bitches have not produced any puppies. At Calavey Pet Services we offer two types of Semen Analysis;

Microscope or CASA - Computer Assisted Semen Analysis

We offer comprehensive canine semen analysis to assess a stud dog’s fertility and overall reproductive health.

Using both traditional microscopic evaluation and advanced Computer Assisted Sperm Analysis (CASA) with the Androscope by Minitube, we provide accurate, detailed assessments of semen quality — helping breeders make informed decisions and plan successful matings.

Our semen analysis service measures key fertility indicators including:

  • Motility: how well the sperm move and swim
  • Concentration: the number of sperm per sample
  • Morphology: the shape and structure of individual sperm cells
  • Progressive movement: the quality of forward motion essential for fertilisation

The CASA system uses high-resolution digital imaging and computer software to automatically evaluate thousands of sperm cells in seconds, giving a precise and objective fertility profile. When combined with skilled microscopic assessment, this delivers an unparalleled level of accuracy and confidence in results.

Regular semen testing is recommended for:

  • Pre-breeding checks to confirm fertility before mating
  • Routine health monitoring of active stud dogs
  • Post-illness or medication assessments
  • Evaluating semen for chilling, freezing or AI use

By 12 months of age most dogs are sexually mature and should provide a good semen sample for analysis. Semen quality can decline after five years of age, so if you would like to freeze semen from your stud dog then the best time is between 18 months and 5 years old - we can recommend specialist fertility vets that provide this service. However many older dogs are quite capable of producing a litter and some may have semen with good enough quality to freeze.

All testing is carried out in our clean, controlled environment using calibrated, specialist equipment. Results are clearly explained, with guidance and support available for next steps or follow-up testing if required.

Whether you’re preparing your stud for service or checking fertility performance, Calavey Pet Services provides trusted, professional analysis for accurate results and complete peace of mind. Working alongside a specialist fertility veterinarian, I can make referrals and obtain information to support the findings.
