Small Animal Ultrasound Scanning

Ultrasound Pregnancy Scans (feline, canine and other small animals)

We provide professional ultrasound pregnancy scanning for small animals in a calm, clean, and stress-free environment.

At Calavey Pet Services we use a high-quality, veterinary-grade ultrasound machine -  Apogee 100Lite scanner with colour Doppler, allowing us to give you a good indication of pregnancy, an estimate of litter size, and where possible identify anything that may need veterinary advice or follow-up. We can also provide you with a scan image to keep if you would like one.  This is usually carried out from around 4 weeks after mating or insemination,  however our preference for a better scanning experience is between 30-33days post first mating. Our scans are completely non-invasive and pain-free, allowing your pet to remain relaxed and comfortable throughout.

An ultrasound scan not only confirms pregnancy — it can also:

  • Check foetal viability by showing movement and heartbeats
  • Measurement to provide an Expected Due Date (EDD)
  • Give an indication of litter size (though sometimes not an exact count)
  • Detect resorption or complications early
  • Provide peace of mind for owners and breeders alike

In some cases, a follow-up scan can be very helpful, particularly where only a small number of puppies are present or where previous pregnancies have involved complications such as resorption or mummified puppies. Where there is a history of pregnancy loss, checking progesterone levels may also be useful, as progesterone needs to remain above a certain level to help maintain the pregnancy. Early awareness and prompt veterinary support can be very important in these situations.

The good news is that most bitches go through pregnancy with very few problems. However, very small or very large litters can sometimes present extra challenges. If only one or two puppies are present, there may not be enough natural stimulus for labour to begin on its own, sometimes referred to as singleton puppy syndrome. Smaller litters can also mean larger puppies, which may make delivery more difficult.

Larger litters can also create difficulties, as the abdomen can become very stretched, which may make the bitch more uncomfortable and can sometimes contribute to a more tiring or prolonged whelping.

Knowing how many puppies to expect and having a good idea of when ovulation took place can be extremely helpful when preparing for whelping. In most cases, puppies are born around 63 days after ovulation (give or take a day), regardless of the mating date. Many breeders also monitor rectal temperature, as this often drops around 24 hours before labour begins. Because this temperature drop is linked to progesterone levels, progesterone testing can also provide useful information if whelping is thought to be approaching.

Being prepared, knowing when puppies are due, and keeping a close eye during the final stages of pregnancy can make a real difference and in some cases may help save lives.

Occasionally, an elective Caesarean section may be the safest option, particularly where there is a history of uterine inertia, prolonged whelping, or where only a single puppy is present. This is always something to be discussed with your veterinary surgeon, but having the right information beforehand can help you plan with confidence.

At Calavey Pet Services, we are here to support you with ultrasound scanning, pregnancy monitoring, and breeder guidance to help you feel informed and prepared every step of the way.
